MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES / REQUIREMENTS

Member of the Society is expected to be current and committed in the payment of his dues and levies as may be imposed by Council.
Memberships are valid for 1 year from the date of registration. Each member and affiliate has a responsibility to further the goals, impact, and interests of the Society to the best of their abilities. Classification of membership is shown below:

Class 1: Full Member

The candidate who holds any degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Medical informatics, or Biomedical Engineering Technology and who previously was not a Student Member, shall have at least the following number of years’ experience in the field after graduation.

Detailed requirements

  • ND+HND: 1.5 years,
  • BSc only: 1 year,
  • BSc+ MSc: 0.5 year, or
  • BSc+MSc degree + PhD: 0 year.
  • PhD only: 0 year

Note
1. All first-class/distinction graduate holders are exempted from registration fees and dues.
2. Members of this category must have a minimum of 4 years of higher education training or its equivalent of 3 years (180 ECT). Have full voting rights and are eligible to hold any executive position.

Class 2: Student Member

Students pursuing a full-time undergraduate or graduate course of study in Biomedical Engineering, Medical informatics, or Biomedical Engineering Technology may be admitted to Student membership for a period not exceeding five years without re-verification of student status. Application and renewal for Student membership must be accompanied by evidence of full-time student status in a recognized program of study in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. A Student member may be upgraded automatically to a Member immediately upon graduation. (Can hold any executive positions).

 

Class 3: Affiliate Member

For this category of membership, prospective applicants will be from specific Engineering profession and are interested in Biomedical Engineering i.e. (Friends of the Society) they are not graduates of Biomedical Engineering but have been exposed to the Biomedical Engineering practices.

The candidate who holds a degree in Natural Sciences or Engineering without emphasis in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering and who previously was not a Student Member shall have at least the following number of years’ experience in the field after graduation: BSc: 4 years, MSc: 3 years and PhD: 2 years. OR A Candidate who holds a BSc degree, or equivalent, in a field other than Engineering or Natural Science, shall have at least 10 years’ experience in Biomedical Engineering. (No Voting right, cannot hold any executive positions, but can be heads of committees).

Class 4: Corporate Member

A Corporate Member is a business or organization that supports the stated purposes of the Society. Corporate membership neither implies membership of its employees nor affects their individual memberships. (Corporate members cannot vote or hold office in the Society but are publicly recognized by the Society for their support.)
